Statistics Canada: Hate Crimes Motivated by Religion, 2018, 2019, 2020

We note that, according to these police-reported data, there was a decline in hate crimes motivated by religion in Canada between 2018 and 2020, especially in Quebec and Alberta.

With regard to Quebec, recall that Bill 21 was adopted on 16th June 2019, in the middle of the three-year period covered by these statistics. Although correlation does not imply causation, there may be a connection. Justice Michel Yergeau of Quebec Superior Court, in his decision of 18th June 2019 rejecting a request to suspend part of the law, observed that the purpose of Bill 21 is to reduce acts of incivility and that this Law is not the cause of such acts.

Total hate crimes motivated by religion in Canada:

  • 2018: 657
  • 2019: 613
  • 2020: 515
