Annual Meeting 2014

The fourth annual general meeting of Atheist Freethinkers (LPA-AFT) was held on
Saturday October 25th 2014 at the Grande bibliothèque in downtown Montreal.
The directors elected are:

  • David Rand, President
  • Jaque Parisien, Secretary
  • Marco DeRossi, Treasurer

Annual Meeting 2013

The third annual general meeting of Atheist Freethinkers (LPA-AFT) was held on
Saturday September 28th 2013 at the Grande bibliothèque in downtown Montreal.
The directors elected are:

  • David Rand, President
  • Jaque Parisien, Secretary-Treasurer
  • Jean Delisle, Director
  • Denis Valiquette, Director

The members discussed the following topics, among others:

  1. The results of an on-line poll of members’ opinions on a variety of topics, in order to orient the organization’s future actions.
  2. The ban on religious symbols in the public service, whether these symbols are displayed by public institutions or worn by public servants on duty. It was decided that our press release of 17th September 2013 [6] best expresses our official position on this issue.
  3. Our participation in the Rassemblement pour la laïcité [7] (Alliance for Secularism).

Annual Meeting 2012

The second annual general meeting of Atheist Freethinkers (LPA-AFT) was held on October 3rd 2012
at the Grande bibliothèque in downtown Montreal. The directors elected are:

  • David Rand, president
  • Raynald Levesque, treasurer
  • Jaque Parisien, secretary

The members adopted the following three propositions:

  1. Given that LPA-AFT is a founding member of the
    International Association of Freethought (IAFT) [8]
    and given that the IAFT has adopted three campaigns as its priorities, these being:
    (a) for separation between religions and states,
    (b) against public funding of religions (the “purple economy”) and
    (c) to denounce crimes of priests,
    Be it resolved that LPA-AFT participate in these three campaigns of the IAFT by gathering,
    during the year 2012-2013, any and all relevant information or documents in order to provide
    an overview of the situation in Quebec and in Canada with respect to these 3 issues.
  2. Be it resolved that LPA-AFT submit an application to
    Atheist Alliance International [9]
    requesting affiliation with that international organization, the cost of such affiliation being about $75 per year.
  3. Given that Quebec society may see the resurgence of debate on the question of state secularism
    as a result of propositions made by two political parties during the recent Quebec election campaign;
    Given that many Quebec citizens reject the hypothesis of the existence of a supernatural being called God;
    Given that these citizens are widely dispersed over the territory of Quebec and have no vehicle to express their opinions publicly;
    Given that LPA-AFT is opposed to any influence by religions in legislation or in public administration;
    Given that the atheist point of view is never presented by those who regularly intervene in public debates,
    Be it resolved that LPA-AFT participate in the future public debate in Quebec on the question of secularism,
    with the goal of presenting the point of view of atheists in favour of complete secularism. These interventions
    will also have the effect of demonstrating the existence of many citizens who reject the supernatural hypothesis
    and that their convictions merit the same respect as that which is normally accorded to believers in monotheism.
    This participation may thus help many individuals, who previously had no voice, to break out of their isolation
    and may put them in contact with LPA-AFT.

Annual Meeting 2011

The first annual meeting of the association Atheist Freethinkers (LPA-AFT)
was held on July 13th, 2011 at the Grande bibliothèque in downtown Montreal.
The newly elected directors are:

  • David Rand, president
  • Raynald Levesque, treasurer
  • Réjean Hotte, secretary

The participants approved new statutes for the organization [10]
and adopted a resolution in support of the Oslo meeting, August 10th, 2011 for the founding
of the International Association of Freethought (IAFT) [8].

Founding

The organization Atheist Freethinkers (LPA-AFT) was formed in 2010 for the purpose of
helping to organize Atheists Without Borders [11], the joint convention of
Atheist Alliance International [9] and
Humanist Canada [12],
held in October of that year.

LPA-AFT was registered with Québec’s Registraire des entreprises on July 19th 2010.
